Postgraduate Study

The National Institute for Christian Education offers accredited postgraduate courses in Christian education for teachers.


The National Institute has a third party arrangement with Morling College to offer postgraduate courses in education. Morling College is registered with the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) as a Higher Education provider and the education postgraduate courses are accredited by TEQSA.

Courses offered

These courses are offered via distance education with unit content being delivered online through our eLearning Portal with personalised tutoring provided by an experienced and qualified lecturer.

This course is integrated with the Master of Education (MEd). It provides both a possible stepping stone into the MEd and an exit point for those wanting to leave the the MEd before completion. If a student who is enrolled in the GradDipEd wants to use their credit points towards an MEd they can apply for this (though they will need to surrender their GradDipEd then complete the remaining 36 credit points). Students enrolled in the MEd who complete 36 units may choose to 'exit' at this point with a GradDipEd instead of the MEd.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should have a 4 year qualification. This should be a degree with a major in education, or a degree and a diploma/certificate in education. Ideally, a student will have teaching experience.

The course requires the completion of 36 credit points.

Course Progression

To complete the GradDipEd students need to acquire 36 credit points. Each unit of study is worth 9 credit points. A student must do one core unit and 3 elective units.

Course Progression

To complete the MEd students need to acquire 72 credit points. Each unit of study is typically worth 9 credit points (exceptions are the Major and Minor Thesis units). A student can choose from 3 pathways through the course:

Stream 1: Coursework

Students must complete the two core units and select 6 units from elective choices. The final unit must be EDE583 Education Project (Capstone Unit). This results in 8 units at 9 credit points which equals 72 units.

Stream 2: Minor Thesis and Coursework

Students must complete the two core units and select three from the elective units. The remaining credit points come from taking ED591 Research Methods in Education and EDE592 Minor Research Thesis in Education. This results in 18 credit points from core, 27 credit points from electives and 27 credit points from the Research Strand which equals 72 credit points.

Stream 3: Major Thesis and Coursework

Students must complete the two core units and select two from the elective units. The remaining credit points come from taking ED591 Research Methods in Education and EDE593 Major Research Thesis in Education. This results in 18 credit points from core, 18 credit points from electives and 36 credit points from the Research Strand which equals 72 credit points.

The Master of Education (Leadership) is a targeted degree program. It is designed to provide an understanding of education theory and practice for professionals in leadership roles in schools and other educational institutions. It is designed for educational practitioners, and those involved in schools or training institutes (without educational qualifications). This is a nationally and internationally recognised award.

NB: Completion of this course does not qualify a person to teach.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should have a 3 year higher education qualification (undergraduate degree) not necessarily in education. It is highly desirable that an applicant have a strategic leadership role in an educational institution or training organisation.

Course Progression

To complete the MEd(Lead), students need to acquire 72 credit points. Each unit of study is typically worth 9 credit points (exceptions are the Major and Minor Thesis units). A student can choose from 3 pathways through the course:

Stream 1: Coursework

Students must complete 3 of the core units and at least 2 units from the Leadership Strand. The student then chooses 2 units from either the Leadership or Contextual Strands. The final unit is EDL583 Educational Leadership Project (Capstone Unit). This results in 27 credit points from core, 18 credit points from Leadership Strand and an additional 18 credit points from either the Leadership or Contextual Strand and then 9 credit points from the Capstone Unit making a total of 72 units.

Stream 2: Minor Thesis and Coursework

Students must complete 3 core units and 2 units from the Leadership Strand. The remaining credit points come from taking ED591 Research Methods in Education and EDL592 Minor Research Thesis in Education. This results in 27 credit points from core, 18 credit points from Leadership Strand and 27 credit points from the Research Strand which equals 72 credit points.

Stream 3: Major Thesis and Coursework

Students must complete 3 core units and 1 unit from the Leadership Strand. The remaining credit points come from taking ED591 Research Methods in Education and EDL593 Major Research Thesis in Education. This results in 27 credit points from core, 9 credit points from the Leadership Strand and 36 credit points from the Research Strand which equals 72 credit points.
